An Interview at a Care Facility for Disabled People

March, 2024

In February 2023, staff from Eisai’s Legal Department interviewed Mr. Koichi Matsushita, the chair of “Heart Pia 2”, a day-care center for people with intellectual or physical disabilities. The facility is located in Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, the same neighborhood as Eisai’s headquarters.

Heart Pia 2

Mr. Matsushita, the chair of “Heart Pia 2”

Eisai has been regularly interacting with users and staff of various welfare facilities, including “Heart Pia 2”, as a part of our hhc socialization activities, through which we aim to empathize with the thoughts and feelings of patients and the people in daily living domain and incorporate them into our business activities. While engaging in such exchanges, we have been able to share the feelings of users and staff of each facility by spending time together.

In this interview, we had the chance to hear about such thoughts once again, as well as problems concerning the social welfare system and difficulties confronting support centers for people with disabilities, along with environmental shifts they went through amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Eisai employees’ who conducted this interview had the following insights to share.

  • This interview was an invaluable experience, giving me an opportunity to reconsider the importance of personal dignity, views on disability, and possible approaches for a pharmaceutical company to contribute to local communities.
  • Through conducting the interview, I also gained numerous insights into myself. Particularly in regards to the main topic of the interview, we all thought we should consider  challenges confronted by welfare centers for disabled people as members of our local communities. I will be glad if this article serves as an opportunity for many to contemplate social welfare.

Under our hhc concept, Eisai will continue to contribute to community development where patients and people in daily living domain can live safely with peace of mind.
