Eisai Co., Ltd. and Mitsui Knowledge Industry Co., Ltd. Conclude
Comprehensive Mutual Cooperation Agreement

Eisai Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Tokyo, President: Haruo Naito) and Mitsui Knowledge Industry Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Tokyo, President: Koichi Suzuki) announced today a comprehensive mutual cooperation agreement in the field of bioinformatics to exchange knowledge, practical skills and techniques achieved by the companies in this area. Mitsui Knowledge Industry Co., Ltd. is a recognized leader in the field of bioinformatics.

The companies will supplement each other and actively seek constructive dialog on mutually beneficial knowledge and techniques, which is a primary feature of this agreement. For shared research themes, the companies can conduct consultations, information exchanges and collaboration, as well as uniting financial resources, appropriate staff, knowledge and techniques of each company. Eisai Co., Ltd. seeks to improve its bioinformatics technology, enhance science for the drug discovery, improve efficiency and rationalization of genome based drug research, and reduce time for new drugs generation, and utilize the outstanding software development technology of Mitsui Knowledge Industry Co., Ltd. for drug research. Mitsui Knowledge Industry Co., Ltd. reflects practical needs and ideas to its system development through establishing close relations in the pharmaceutical research field, and develops new techniques and systems for bioinformatics, and improves effectiveness of data exploitation in actual genome based drug research.

At Eisai Co., Ltd., the Laboratory of Seeds Finding Technology has been conducting research to discover new drug ideas, making full use of state-of-the-art techniques of the genome sciences such as DNA microarray and proteome, and molecular biology methods with genetic model organisms. Achievements from these approaches based on Eisai's original concept of "medicinal genetics" which focuses on the research drug targets using its in-house chemical compounds, and research on purification and identification of new ligands of orphan GPCR (G-protein coupled receptors), are expected.

Mitsui Knowledge Industry Co., Ltd. entered into the field of bioinformatics since 1975, and expanded its corporate size along with the recent development of biotechnology-related business to grow to 100 professionals in bioinformatics, currently one of the largest companies in the industry. The company has participated in national projects for many years and exploits biotechnology-related knowledge, skills and techniques accumulated during these projects, and focuses on production of self-developed products such as a privacy security system for patients and donors, and building biotechnology-related systems based on this and other products.
