 Acetylcholinesterase inhibitor
 Pharmaceuticals/treatments
By blocking the action of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, which breaks down acetylcholine, this agent increases the concentration of acetylcholine in the brain and is thus anticipated to delay the progression of Alzheimer's disease. This is because while Alzheimer's disease is characterized by a reduction in the variety of neurotransmitters, it has become clear that it is particularly associated with a reduction in acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter connected to the functioning of memory.
