Partnering with Eisai

Established in 1995, Eisai Inc. has grown rapidly in the US to become an integrated pharmaceutical business with sales of approximately $2.6 billion in fiscal year 2006 (year ended March 31, 2007). The company achieved these goals through strategic R&D, external partnerships and product acquisitions - a three-fold approach that has helped Eisai move up rapidly in the rankings of US pharmaceutical companies (based on retail sales) from No. 44 to No. 19 between 1998 and 2005.

History of Success Through R&D and Partnerships

From the start, Eisai pioneered "strategic co-promotions," or product-focused collaborations without the restrictions of formal joint ventures. The strategic alliances for Aricept® (donepezil hydrochloride tablets) with Pfizer Inc and Aciphex® (rabeprazole sodium) with Janssen Pharmaceutica Inc. attest to Eisai's ability to discover and develop blockbuster products and to successfully partner with world-leading pharmaceutical companies.

The launches of Aricept® and Aciphex® are two of the most successful in US history. Both are realizing their potential to become billion-dollar products in the United States by providing unique benefits to patients and their families.

A Fully Integrated US Pharmaceutical Company

Eisai Inc. has experienced much growth since launching Aricept® in 1997, and is well poised to achieve its vision of being independently capable of developing, manufacturing, distributing and marketing high-quality products. The company's second agreement with Pfizer, in which Eisai acquired exclusive rights to promote Cerebyx® (fosphenytoin sodium injection) in the United States, was a testament to the successful Aricept® alliance as well as to Eisai's marketing and sales capabilities. Within three months, a hospital sales force was created and within one year, product sales surpassed projections.

The Cerebyx® deal was the first of four in less than two years. In May 2003, a US co-promotion and co-development agreement with Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. was announced for rasagiline once approved by the FDA. An in-licensing agreement with Novartis Pharma AG, in February 2004, gained Eisai exclusive worldwide rights to develop, market and manufacture rufinamide. Most recently, in March 2004, Eisai acquired exclusive North American and European rights to Zonegran® from Elan Pharmaceutical Inc. for the adjunctive treatment of partial seizures in adults with epilepsy. Along with the product, Eisai acquired the right to hire Elan's North American neurology sales force.

These business development activities build upon Eisai's neurology franchise, which was established with Aricept®, the number-one prescribed Alzheimer's treatment worldwide.

Working With Other Companies: Global and Local Strengths

With the strong backing of its Tokyo-based parent company, Eisai Inc. offers significant financial resources and the ability to align goals on an international basis to successfully execute business partnerships and acquire products for independent sales and marketing. Eisai also provides the experience needed to guide products through various regulatory and approval processes.

In-depth knowledge and highly developed relationships with physicians result from the efforts of Eisai Inc.'s specialty sales forces, which help ensure that every product receives the attention it deserves.

In addition, sound, long-term investments continue to be made, for example, in the expansion of Eisai Inc.'s sales forces, its R&D and manufacturing facilities and its distribution capabilities.

Eisai targets opportunities in four areas of therapeutic focus and strategic strength - neurology, gastrointestinal disorders, oncology and acute care - to fulfill the company's human health care mission to satisfy unmet medical needs and increase benefits to patients and their families.

As an integral part of Eisai's global operations, Eisai Inc. works closely with Eisai global affiliates in Japan, Asia and Europe to evaluate each business opportunity in all relevant regions of the world.
